We’re excited to share some big news: our waterfront on Lake Minnewashta in Excelsior just got a giant refresh! The newly restored space is not only a beautiful hangout, but also a hub for adventure, learning, and environmental care.

Thanks to generous support from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation and the Fred C. and Katherine B. Anderson Foundation, we’ve implemented sustainable design features that stabilize the shoreline, reduce runoff, and improve access to the lake for swimming, boating, fishing, and outdoor learning.

“At Camp Fire Minnesota, we believe nature sparks curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love for the outdoors,” said Kori Redepenning, President & CEO. “This revamped space helps us provide more kids with meaningful access to nature and moments that can shape their future.”

Each year, more than 10,000 youth make memories on the shores of Lake Minnewashta. With this project, we’ve expanded hands-on opportunities for environmental exploration, where many young people experience their nature firsts, including kayaking, fishing, or simply dipping their toes in the water.

CenterPoint Energy’s Vice President of Community Relations, June Deadrick, shared, “We’re proud to support a space where children can explore, connect with nature, and learn about conserving our state’s natural resources. We hope this inspires the next generation of environmental stewards.”

Lance Elliot, our civil engineer, added, “The project transformed an eroding lakeshore into a welcoming beach, featuring deep-rooted native plants that stabilize the shoreline. The upper beach canoe area was designed to capture rainwater and reduce runoff to the lake. It’s a win-win: improving lake health while creating new opportunities for youth to explore and appreciate this incredible natural space.”
